To take care of your hair on a daily basis, there’s nothing like a natural serum to apply after each shampoo. Good news, this simple product can be easily made at home. We give you the good recipes.

What is a hair serum?

Quicker to apply than a mask, the serum is used in small quantity, most often on the lengths or only the ends. It is applied to damp hair after shampooing, but also to dry hair at any time of the day. It is not rinsed out, and you can style your hair with or without the product, right after application. This serum aims to nourish and strengthen the fiber: it is a great ally for dull, brittle, damaged hair, but it can also be suitable for oily hair. In one simple step, it allows you to regain vitality and shine.

Serum for hair: the right plant oils

The basic element to make your serum in DIY mode: vegetable oil. Most can be used, but some are more recommended than others to boost the hair fiber.

Jojoba oil is frequently found in their composition. It is one of the most versatile, adapted to all hair types, it brings them suppleness and shine. Above all, it is this one that you must choose in case of oily hair. Its composition makes it an asset to fight against the excessive production of sebum. It can even be used in massage for the scalp before shampooing.

Less common, broccoli oil is often used in the composition of hair serums. It is also not very greasy, brings softness, and has smoothing virtues, ideal in case of forks or unruly hair.

You can also use avocado oil for shine and strength, but also castor oil if you want to stimulate growth.

For dry hair or to enhance coloring, we recommend argan oil, which is very hydrating. Also worth testing: black cumin oil (especially for hair loss) and macadamia oil (regenerative, perfect for damaged hair). Finally, for those who try in vain to fight against frizz, it is on the oil of piqui that you must bet.

A serum customized to your hair type

A mixture of two or three oils can be enough to make an excellent hair serum. But to maximize its effect and customize it to your needs, you can add one or more essential oils. In case of greasy hair, it is the peppermint that you should think first. It allows to cleanse the scalp durably. Clary sage and rosemary have similar properties and promote growth. For olfactory pleasure, ylang-ylang is a sure bet! It also tones all hair types and repairs even the driest.

You can also add aloe vera gel, which moisturizes and balances. It is also possible to add vitamin E, in capsule or liquid form, which will nourish the hair a little more but also help to keep your home preparation longer.
