A spa day at home can be just as relaxing and enjoyable as a session at an expensive spa. Pick a day when you won’t be disturbed, turn off your cell phone and light some candles to get you in the mood.
People have been taking the spring and sea waters for healing purposes for millennia. The practice is said to date back to at least the times of the ancient Greeks, who considered bathing a treatment against diseases. The Romans, influenced by the Greeks, built thermal baths at mineral and thermal springs where wounded soldiers – and everyone else – would go for rest and recuperation.
Taking the warm waters in a spring or spa bath may have a range of mental health benefits. These have been shown to include decreases in self-reported levels of depression and anxiety, and improved sleep.
In our fast-paced lives, it is sometimes difficult to free up time to take care of ourselves and even more so when it comes to scheduling an appointment with a beautician or a spa! Choosing The Right Time For An At-Home Spa
In a busy day, it’s best to plan your at-home spa day to avoid interruptions. Block off a time in your schedule that suits you, whether it’s a full day, a few hours or even just one: a soothing bath in the right atmosphere can be enough to provide a relaxing break. Whatever the duration, however, choose a time when you are unlikely to be interrupted: a Sunday, an afternoon during the children’s school day or a day off, for example.
Planning The Right Program For A Spa Day
The program depends primarily on the time you have available and your tastes. The basics? A warm, scented bath, a body and face scrub, then more targeted treatments as needed: facial sauna, mask or anti-imperfection patches for the face, complete body and face moisturizing accompanied by a massage. You can even include a manicure or pedicure if you wish. If you don’t have a bathtub, treat yourself to a long shower and gently exfoliate your skin with a glove, just like in a hammam.
Cut To Better Disconnect
Another essential element to feel like you’re at the spa at home: disconnection! Extracting yourself from your daily routine requires you to leave behind all disruptive elements, starting with notifications, messages or calls from connected devices. Limit their use as much as possible by turning them off completely or by activating the airplane mode. If you want to keep yourself busy, choose a book or magazine instead. If you have a schedule to keep, set an alarm rather than constantly monitoring the time.
Homemade Facials: A Trend For Our Skin
The advantages of “Do It Yourself” are no longer to be proven. Homemade cosmetic recipes provide us with fresh and natural products. But beware, this anti-waste solution also has some constraints due to the rules of conservation. First thing: Take a relaxing bath For Your Spa Day
1. Run a bath.
Fill the tub with water at exactly the right temperature for you, whether you like it very hot or only lukewarm. While it’s running, turn the lights down or off and light some candles. You can also take other steps to help you relax even more. For example, you can:
- have a glass of wine, juice, punch, water or a cup of tea
- Playing music (try typing “spa playlist” or “spa music” on the Internet)
- burn incense
- prepare a soft towel or robe
2. Enhance the water.
Add bath salts, essential oils or other products. This is a great way to make bathing even more enjoyable while giving you the benefits of aromatherapy. You don’t have to limit yourself to salts. You can add whatever you want, whether it’s bubble bath, bath oils, bath beads, bath bombs or anything else.
If you want, add milk and oatmeal to the water, as these products have moisturizing properties perfect for dry skin.
You could also add almond, jojoba or even coconut oil to get soft, smooth skin when you get out of the bath.
3. Make a skin mask.
At a professional spa, they sometimes offer a choice between a seaweed or mud mask. The former is difficult to replicate at home, but you can easily make a homemade mud mask using cosmetic clay. Let it sit on your skin for a few minutes before rinsing. Your skin will feel refreshed and softened.
- Mix half a glass of cosmetic clay with two tablespoons of water to form a thick paste.
- Spread the paste on your arms, legs and torso.
- Let it dry while you run the bath.
- Rinse off the mask in the bath.
4. Massage yourself.
With all the work you do on non-rest days, you may find your back, legs, arms or neck aching. Take the time to massage your sore muscles with your fingers to relax them while you’re in the hot water.
5. Exfoliate your skin.
Use an exfoliating sponge or scrub to thoroughly exfoliate your arms, legs and torso. When you get out of the tub, your skin will be soft, smooth and refreshed.
Gently scrub in circular motions to remove dead skin.
If you wish, you can also shave your legs and other body parts after exfoliation.
6. Dry yourself.
Pat your skin dry with a towel and then apply lotion or moisturizer to your arms, legs and torso to help retain moisture. Once you’ve covered your body with moisturizer, put on a robe and let the product soak into your skin before getting dressed.

1. Exfoliate your face.
Wet it with warm water and rub it with a washcloth or facial scrub to remove dead skin. Use circular motions and don’t apply pressure, as the skin in this area is very sensitive and if you treat it too aggressively, it could stretch and wrinkle.
Facial scrubs are quite effective. You can buy one or make your own by mixing a tablespoon of olive oil, a tablespoon of powdered almonds or oatmeal and a teaspoon of water. Rub the mixture onto your face and rinse with warm water.
2. For Your Spa Day : Make a steam treatment.
Fill a small pot with water and heat it on the stove. When steam starts to come out, drape a towel over your head and put your head over the pan so that the steam touches your face. Leave it over the pan for 2-3 minutes to get the most benefit from the steam.
Be careful not to get your face too close to the water, as the steam will be too hot. Your face should be hot, but not so hot that it is uncomfortable or painful.
To make the experience more pleasant, pour a few drops of essential oil into the pan. Lavender, tea tree and rose all have a relaxing effect.
3. Apply a face mask.
Face masks are fun to use at home and they make your skin very soft. Buy one or make one from a recipe that contains products you probably have in the kitchen. Apply the mixture to your face, let it sit for 15 minutes and then rinse your skin. Here are some common recipes.
- For dry skin, mix one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of olive oil.
- For normal skin, mix one teaspoon of honey and one mashed banana.
- If you have oily skin, mix one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of cosmetic clay.
4. Moisturize your face.
When you’re done with all your facials, apply a good moisturizer to help your skin retain moisture. You can use a store-bought moisturizer or apply a little jojoba, argan or sweet almond oil. These oils help moisturize and balance the skin without causing acne.
If you have very dry skin, use coconut oil. If you tend to have clogged pores, however, be aware that this product could cause pimples to form.
Last but not least: Get a manicure and a pedicure
1. Remove old nail polish.
Start by removing all the old polish from your fingernails and toenails. If possible, use acetone-free nail polish remover, as this substance dries out the nails.
2. Soak your fingers.
Fill a bowl with warm water and dip your fingers in it, immersing your nails completely for 5 minutes. This will soften your nails and cuticles so you can shape them more easily.
Do not put oil or soap in the warm water. It is advisable to use only water to avoid residue on your nails when you apply the polish.
3. Clip your nails.
Cut them in a curve with nail scissors or nail clippers. Remember to round the corners. Then use a file to smooth out any irregularities and shape your nails to look like they’ve been professionally trimmed.
4. Push back your cuticles.
Gently push them back with a wooden or metal cuticle pusher so that they no longer show on the surface of your nails. Push them back very gently and be careful not to tear or cut them, as they need to stay on your fingers to protect them from infection.
5. Apply polish.
A good manicure includes at least three coats: a base coat, a color coat and a protective coat. Some people choose to layer several coats of color so that the polish is opaque. Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next to avoid smudging.
The best way to paint your nails cleanly is to do one stroke on each side before filling in the middle.
If you want to create a nail polish design, do so after applying the color coat and before applying the protective coat.
6. Prepare your feet.
Give them a bath and exfoliate them. We often forget to take care of our feet on a daily basis, but on your spa day, take the time to pamper them! Soak them in the bath or in a tub of warm water. If they are dry or have horn, smooth the rough parts with a pumice stone.
Very tough horn sometimes requires a little more rigorous treatment to remove. Try using a horn razor or other tool made to remove dead skin.
7. Take care of your nails.
Trim and polish them. Start by trimming your toenails with nail clippers. Remember to round the corners to avoid ingrown toenails. Then apply polish. You can indulge yourself and apply color with the three-coat method or just put on a coat of clear polish to protect your nails and give them a little shine.
