When you have acne-prone skin, applying creams and lotions can result in problems for your skin. I mean, why would you add more oil and moisture to your already oily and greasy skin?

Truth be told, it’s what your skin needs. Although it may seem ironic, a good moisturizer can help control excessive oil production in the skin (even an essential oil for acne-prone skin can help.

The explanation of the above is very simple:

When your skin is dry and dehydrated, it considers that it does not have enough moisture to protect itself and fulfill its function. Therefore, it produces more oil than needed and this means problems for oily skin.

Too much oil will not only make your skin look dull, but it can also cause clogged pores and acne.

Now, you’re probably wondering: how do you choose the right product for your skin type?

We’ll walk you through the whole process.

To start, you need to know your skin first. It’s not enough that you know you’re prone to pimples.

For example, if you have acne-prone skin that is also oily, you need to stay away from products that are thick, creamy and contain oil.

Look for something that is light and water-based to avoid clogging pores.

Aside from the formula, you also need to watch out for ingredients. It’s good if you can find a moisturizing product with acne-fighting ingredients and components that can protect your skin from further damage.

Here are some good examples:

Salicylic acid.

This ingredient is so effective against acne that you can see it in many products. You can find it in creams, cleansers and even toners.

But here’s what’s interesting.

Salicylic acid needs to be used consistently for it to be effective. If you suddenly stop applying it, there’s a good chance your pimples will come back.

This is a good reason why this ingredient is better in creams than in soaps and body washes. Because creams and lotions stay on your skin longer, this means that salicylic acid can keep working throughout the day.

Keep in mind, however, that moisturizers with this ingredient are not always a suitable option. If you are using topical acne treatments, using them in conjunction with a cream with this component can cause dryness.

Glycolic acid

This is another great ingredient when it comes to moisturizing acne-prone skin. What it basically does is help remove dead skin cells. It should be a choice if your skin is also dry, irritated and inflamed.

SPF

Tanning may seem like a good idea for hiding acne, but it’s not. While it may make your acne spots less noticeable, your skin can develop more problems once the tan fades. You can end up with darker spots, dry skin and an uneven complexion.

So, to make sure these undesirable effects don’t occur, look for a moisturizer with built-in sunscreen. Apply it every day to protect yourself.

If you can’t find a moisturizer with SPF, you can invest in a separate sunscreen. Opt for sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher and make sure it’s oil-free and non-comedogenic. Here are some of the best sunscreens for acne-prone skin.
